The name bicycle comes from Latin bi - two and Greek kyklos - circle, wheel. The first bicycle in Britain was made in 1840. Cycling became popular with the invention of the penny-farthing in 1872.

penny-farthing - wczesny typ roweru z ogromnym przednim kołem i maleńkim tylnym. Nazwa pochodzi stąd, że przedni koło przypominało monetę jednopensową (penny) a tylne monetę o nominale ćwierć pensa, zwaną farthing.
